Danielle Trofe herself is a Brooklyn based designer who uses science, technology and sustainability to create striking and innovative products. She has won numerous awards and accolades after moving to the city from Washington DC. Her previous job was in fashion but she soon became interested in designing products that use new technologies and scientific innovations.
She discovered mushroom mycelium which was being developed as an alternative to Styrofoam and an idea sprouted (pun intended).
Her first creation was a vertical, self-sustaining garden that uses hydroponics and a self-watering system. It's changed the possibilities of indoor gardening for an urban lifestyle.
In 2014, Danielle started her company when she created Mush-Lume, aesthetically pleasing lamp shades made from mushrooms. Actually, she uses the live cells of mycelium (which is where mushrooms come from) and fuses them with a mixture of corn stalk and hemp. The mycelium works like glue and is then heated and dried to prevent any unwanted aromas or growing more mushrooms. And when you finish using your lamp shade, it's completely compostable and biodegradable.
Her lamps are used at the newly opened 1Hotel Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo. For those that don't want to commit to buying a lamp shade, you can also purchase a kit to GIY (Grow it Yourself) through Ecovative.
Danielle Trofe Design now operates on the fourth floor of Industry City and we take guests to meet Danielle, learn about her process, and buy a new beautiful sustainable lamp shade on certain days (usually Tuesdays) of our Made in NY: Industry City tour.
Not only are these lamp shades really cool and beautiful to look at, but they are helping our environment and changing the way we view material goods. We completely support the idea of making products out of natural, sustainable materials that are biodegradable and not petroleum-based plastics. That way nothing ends up in landfills, but rather back to the earth.
It follows our Responsible Travel commitment and we are very excited to introduce customers to Danielle Trofe's important and fashionable work.
