The original Artists & Fleas marketplace was founded in 2003 by husband and wife team Amy Abrams and Ronen Gilmer in an empty warehouse in Williamsburg. They both grew up collecting and shopping for unique items with their parents (Ronen's father even ran an art gallery) and always collected souvenirs and crafts from their extensive travels, so creating a communal marketplace to showcase local artists seemed like a no-brainer.
Amy, a personal stylist, is also the co-founder of In Good Company and Ronen used to work in marketing. But once Artists & Fleas grew, they both started to concentrate on curating and expanding the markets.
More than 30 individual sellers bring their merch and wares for a daily dose of show-and-sell in an environment that is uniquely created and curated to offer an alternative to the traditional retail experience. New sellers arrive every other week making Artists & Fleas at Chelsea Market a place to constantly discover new, emerging talent and creativity.
When you stroll through Artists & Fleas, you can find all sorts of unexpected treasures from art and photography to vintage clothing to handcrafted jewelry to used records. Browsing and chatting with the designers is part of the experience.
Artists & Fleas became a permanent fixture inside Chelsea Market in 2014. The vendors change regularly so you never know what goodies you will find. They are located at the western entrance of the market just steps away from the High Line. So we make it a point to often stop by on our new High Line & Chelsea Tour.
You can now also find Artists & Fleas locations in Soho, Williamsburg, and Los Angeles.
This kind of communal shopping is rare in New York. Here, you can interact with the local designers and the entrepreneurial community while discovering one-of-a-kind souvenirs. It's a very different experience than the retail chain stores offer and one you can only have among this marketplace community.
