#TuesdayTidbits- #GuideProfile:  Alex in Flatbush

At Urban Oyster you'll find some of the most interesting, informative, and fun guides in the city.  We've created a little video series so you can get to know them a little better.  Each guide has chosen one of their favorite neighborhoods to show off.  Check out this first video to see guide Alex's favorite spots to hang out in Flatbush.

Alex in Flatbush:
Alex is an American army brat who grew up in Germany and European drinking ages being what they are, he developed a love for beer at an early age.  While still dedicated to the German lagers of his hometown, he got to explore Europe’s great varieties of beers and ales from the Benelux to the British Isles.  Here in the US he became an actor, and had the good fortune of being on tour in the late nineties just as the Craftbrew movement was taking off.  He was introduced to great American brews from coast to coast and border to border.  He moved to New York about fifteen years ago, and working as a bartender between acting gigs, he was immersed in the culture of food and drink that is such a great part of this city’s history.  As a tour guide, he found an amazing opportunity to share this culture with others and see that history continue.

Why He Loves Being a Tour Guide: It combines 3 things he loves; history, beer, and performance.
Favorite Slice.  Wheated in Ditmars Park, Brooklyn.
Special Skills. Plays the african thumb piano & makes a really good Glühwein (German mulled wine).
For more of Alex's Flatbush picks, check out his map of the neighborhood.

As the official, local NYC team for Urban Adventures, we’re lucky to be linked up with amazing tours across the globe in over 100 locations!  Since 2009, Urban Adventures has been offering day tours with a local, the goal is to really get off the beaten path and to connect with the locals, even if you only had one day to do so.  From bike tours to food tours, all of the tours around the globe focus on a path you might not have thought to take with only your guide book.  But, of course, our favorite are the beer tours.

With our discount code “UANYC” you can get 10% off of any Urban Adventure Tour.  We’ve put together some of our favorite beer tours as inspiration but you can see the full list of locations & tours on Urban Adventures site.

Philly on Tap in Philadelphia
This tour will take you through the “City of Brotherly Love”’s legendary beer scene where you’ll visit bars, pubs, and microbrewereis.  You’ll get to drink in the city’s oldest pub, sample craft brews, and visit other local favorites, while learning about the tradition and culture of this historic city.  What better way to get to know a city?

Beer Makes History Better in Toronto
Complete with a “beer geek tour guide”, this tour will take you through some of Toronto’s favorite pubs as well as the Distillery District, a former industrial park and whiskey factory that is now a center of art, culture, and great cafes.  While you drink, you’ll learn about Toronto’s early history, and even visit the famous St. Lawrence Market.

Prague Beer and Czech Tapas Tour in Prague
In a city famous for it’s beer, this tour will take you to some of it’s beloved beer halls and a more modern microbrewery.  You’ll enjoy some Czech ‘beer tapas’ with your drinks in each pub you visit while learning about the Czech/Bohemian lifestyle and beer culture starting from the Middle Ages, through Communism, and continuing today.
