#CurrentObsessions: Domino Park

The Who:
Henry Havemeyer is a big name in Brooklyn history. He and his family founded the famous Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg that was and continues to be an iconic landmark for the neighborhood. After the refinery closed in 2004, the historic buildings sat mostly abandoned for over 10 years.

The first leg of a major re-development of this site, which is now owned by Two Trees, has just opened to the public. Domino Park is a gorgeous waterfront public space that was designed by James Corner Field Operations - the designers behind the High Line, where we lead a tour that discusses that re-development.

All the communities in Williamsburg and beyond have come out to enjoy the park. You'll see Hasidic children from the neighborhood playing in the fountain, hipsters waiting in line for tacos (from restaurateur Danny Meyer), and families gazing at the gorgeous views.

The What:
Domino Park is a 5-acre space with stunning views of Manhattan and a looming industrial building behind it that will soon be converted into residential space. But it's not just your typical park.

An Artifact Walk allows visitors to walk along an elevated catwalk that is from the factory's original warehouse get a unique perspective of the East River. The Playground brings to life elements of the original sugar refinery for kids to explore and experience.  Kids and adults alike can frolic in the Fountain waterworks and be wowed by the Fog Bridge. And foodies can feast on the Mexican food at Tacocina.

This park is also not too far from where we begin our Brewed in Brooklyn tour, so it's a perfect place to come and enjoy the views before a tour.

The Why:
These buildings have been sitting empty for a while and there has not really been a proper park in South Williamsburg. This brings the community out together and activates this old industrial site. The views are unbeatable and it's the newest piece of the ever-changing Brooklyn waterfront.

The Where:
Domino Park
15 River Street
Brooklyn, New York 11249

The Who:
We are the who. As you may know, Urban Oyster is also known as New York City Urban Adventures. And we now have over 20 guides here in New York. Since we are often giving tours for others, we don't get to see each other as much as we'd like. This is not a typical office job.

Once in a while we get together socially to share our love of New York, swap stories, plan new tours, and kick back a local beer or two. And now we'd like to invite you to join us for the Best. Happy. Hour. Ever.

Anybody can join - we want our partners (the brewers, bartenders, baristas, cheesemongers, etc.) that we visit on our tours, our fellow travel industry employees, and our lovely guests to join us to mingle, network, and have a great time.

The What:
Loreley Beer Garden, our final stop on the Tenements Tales and Tastes tour will be hosting the event on Monday, June 25 from 6-8pm. If you've never been, we recommend it because they have incredible German food (we are partial to their pretzels), a great beer selection, and a festive garden in the back.

Happy Hour drink specials will be available. We love to socialize (as you've discovered if you have ever joined us on one of our tours) and talk all things New York, food, and travel. You might also know we have a focus on responsible and sustainable travel. So come and chat with us about any or all of those things. Or just come for a beer to mingle and network.

Find out more and RSVP on our Facebook event page.

The Why:
This is a great opportunity to connect with our guides, the local business owners and employees that make this city so unique, and like-minded travelers and tourism lovers.

The Where:
Loreley Beer Garden

New York, NY 10002
