#TuesdayTidbits- Prohibition Bakery

6/10/2015

Prohibition Bakery on the Lower East Side is a "boozy cupcakery".
And we could probably stop right there.

But if you somehow needed more convincing, this unique bakery focuses on creating high quality cupcakes with complex flavors, seasonal ingredients, and natural flavoring.  Each cupcake is inspired by a different drink so you can find anything from a Sangria cupcake to an Old Fashioned. They're always experimenting and adding to the menu so keep a look out for new flavors.  The alcohol is added after the cupcakes are baked so it is still in there.

We start our NY Cocktail Tour with a round of their cupcakes, so we've tried a lot, and they're all delicious (the White Russian, and Beer & Pretzels are some of their best sellers).   Keep in mind you DO have to be 21 to purchase.

In a building shared with Theater 80, an amazing Crepe Counter (which used to serve as a dressing room for the theater) and the Museum of the American Gangster, visiting this Prohibition-era speakeasy feels like stepping back in time.  Inside you’ll find the original bar, pictures of the Prohibition years, and safes (in the basement) where a previous (mobster connected) tenement kept millions of dollars as well as dynamite if he needed to get rid of evidence quick.

On top of all of it’s incredible history, our NY Cocktail Tour visits for the Absinth- they serve over a dozen varieties, and the well-versed bartenders can recommend one based on what you’re into.  It’s even served in the traditional method; icy water dripped over a touched sugar cube.  Still family owned since the 1960s, this is your classic neighborhood bar, with some very colorful history.
