This year’s 13th annual Tribeca Film Festival is coming up starting April 16 and closing April 27, 2014.  Founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff it helped bring the community of New York City and visitors back to Lower Manhattan and revitalize the neighborhoods which had been avoided and devalued since the 9/11 attack that year.  The neighborhood, which stands for the “Triangle Below Canal Street”, today is a thriving center of culture, art and creativity.

Today the Tribeca Film Festival brings crowds of up to 3 million people every year including many big named celebrities and supports local Tribeca restaurants and hotels.  The Festival has become a major film industry event, promoting New York City as a filmmaking hub and helping filmmakers, both new and established, to reach new audiences.

Films are chosen from over 5,000 submissions, this year there will be almost 100 feature-length films and 60 shorts screened as well as multiple panel discussions with filmmakers and actors.

Not able to make it to the city?  Participate online with their online festival including #6secfilms.

Tickets to the general public go on sale Monday April 14th and can be purchased online at the festival’s official website (tickets range from $12.50 for matinees to $20.50 for evening and weekend showings).  Be sure to purchase tickets in advance as the most anticipated films and panels sell out quickly.

#TuesdayTidbits- Himalayan Heights

This week’s #TuesdayTidbit blog is highlighting the Himalayan Heights area in New York City. If you’ve ever gotten off near the 74th St./Broadway stop on the 7 train in Jackson Heights, you know exactly what we are talking about. This area has so much to offer, and isn’t your typical tourist spot. Read below to find out more about this awesome area and why you should come check it out for yourself.

Himalayan Heights has a huge population of Tibetan & Nepalese. This can be see in New York's Himalayan food, which encompasses both Tibetan and Nepali cuisines. Though the area is known to have other Asian cuisine like Indian, Thai and Chinese, Himalayan food is typically less spicy, and uses traditional Tibetan and Nepalese ingredients like yak butter and Himalayan black salt.
If you’re looking for somewhere different to eat, a famous Tibetan momo (dumpling) shop is Lhasa Fast Food and is a small cart in the back of a now empty cell phone shop. You can also engulf yourself in the culture of the neighborhood and check out some of the local stores, which sell saris & Bollywood DVDs. Whether you’re looking to try new cuisine, find out about the Himalayan culture, or just have a fun time, you should check out Himalayan Heights.
