Brewing Up Fun For SuperBowl Sunday- #TuesdayTidbits

1/27/2014

Super Bowl Sunday is considered a sacred day by some. With a combination of football, beer, and snacks, it’s no wonder why everyone looks forward to it. While most people know about the two teams and their statistics, we’ve decided to take a look at the most important statistics: beer. Read below to find out about all of the cool beer facts linked with the Super bowl!
- It is estimated that viewers will consume 325 million gallons of beer during this Sunday’s game. To put that in perspective, you can fill 1,938 Olympic-sized pools.
- During last year’s Super bowl, viewers purchased 50 million cases of beer for the game.
- The most popular domestic beers include: Bud Light, Coors Light, Budweiser, Miller Lite & Natural Light.
- The top selling Craft beers include: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Sam Adams Boston Lager, New Belgium Fat Tire, Shiner Bock, & Widmer Hefeweizen.
- Metlife Stadium, host of Super bowl XLVIII, sells the following beers: Leinenkugel (on tap Sunset Wheat & seasonal), Shock Top, Dos Equis, Stella Artois, Becks, Yuengling, Sam Adams (rotating tap), Bass, Hoegaarden, Heineken, Landshark, Bud Light, Bud Light Lime, Budweiser, Coors Light, and Miller Lite.
- Beer drinkers be warned, the average price for beer at MetLife Stadium is $8.75, the second-highest in the NFL.
- As you can see from the list, there is not much to choose from in terms of local beers.  No New Jersey or New York craft beers are served.  However you could make an argument that the Budweiser, Bud Light, etc. is local since it likely comes from Newark's Budweiser plant which produces 9.5 million barrels of InBev products.  Of course its still Bud.  You're best bet for local beer and the Super Bowl?  Check out our #MustDoMondays recommendations for Sunday.  We've chosen two great events and both will be pouring local craft beer.

#TuesdayTidbits- How New York City Battles Snow

1/20/2014

While most people have bounced back after snowstorm Hercules, we may be seeing some more snow showers in the near future. We’ve decided to give you a quick rundown on how New York battles the snow differently than most places: from snow removal, to street parking, so that you can be prepared for the next storm!

If you’re not one to shovel your sidewalk, you could be facing some serious trouble. New York laws require homeowners to clear snow from the public sidewalk in front of their house, as well any pathways on their property that lead to their mailbox. Also, New York holds private homeowners civilly liable for others' injuries incurred by falling in areas that have been shoveled! Make sure to get out there and shovel, or find a willing teenager to do it for you!

Ever wonder why your trash doesn’t get picked up during a snowstorm? That’s because the Department of Sanitation transforms their garbage trucks into truck plows. Also, some of their trucks are modified to be able to spread snow salt. The DSNY categorizes and services roadways in the following order: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary streets. To see what your street classifies as, click here.
When the Transportation Commissioner declares a state of snow emergency, no one is allowed to stand or park a vehicle on any street designated as a “snow street.” This restriction continues until the Transportation Commissioner declares the prohibition of such standing or parking over. Also, when a state of snow emergency is declared, no one is allowed to operate a vehicle on a snow street.

The most important thing to remember is to stay safe and warm during a snow storm. If you’re looking for things to do on a snow day, make sure to check out our other #TuesdayTidbits that include New York Fireplaces That Will Keep You Warm, Stay Warm with Tea, and more!
