Brooklyn Navy Yard Tour:
The Past, Present & Future of the Yard

Comprehensive Tour (2 hours)
Join us for this tour replete with fascinating stories of the Brooklyn Navy Yard's past, present, and future. For over 150 years, the Brooklyn Navy Yard churned out America's most famous fighting ships, from the USS Maine to the USS Missouri. Today, the Yard is becoming a model for sustainable urban industrial parks.  This tour explores the vast 300-acre property and offers opportunities to take a closer look at the Yard's most intriguing sites, including a a dry dock that's been used since before the Civil War, the 24-acre former Navy hospital campus that is virtually frozen in time, and the nation's first multi-story LEED Gold-certified industrial building. While this tour uses a bus to get you from place to place, we will be getting off the bus at almost all of the stops.

Start and End Points: The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92 at 63 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. 
Admission: $30/person. Tickets may be purchased at BLDG 92 but tours do sell out.  Advance ticket purchase is strongly encouraged.
January-February Schedule: Saturdays in Jan. & Feb from 12:30PM-2:30PM (see calendar for dates).
March-October Schedule: Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30PM-4:30PM. (see calendar for dates).

Highlights Tour (1 hour)
Join us for a one-hour “highlights” tour of the Yard. This new abbreviated Yard tour provides a broader overview of the Yard’s rich history and exciting future and includes visits to a historic 1851 dry dock, a former machine shop, and a new green industrial building. This shorter tour is a great way to both see the Yard and experience the exhibits at BLDG 92—and have lunch in the café! This tour uses a bus to get from place to place, but you will be getting off the bus for a closer look at most of the stops.
Length: 1 hour

Admission: $18 per person.  Tickets may be purchased at BLDG 92 but tours do sell out.  Advance ticket purchase is strongly encouraged.
January-February Schedule:  Most Saturdays and Sundays in January and February from 3:00PM-4:00PM (see calendar for dates).
March-October Schedule: Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00-2:00PM.

Getting a Handle on Sustainability
Pedal along with us on this bicycle tour as we explore the Brooklyn Navy Yard's transition from being one of the nation's foremost naval shipbuilding facilities to a national leader for sustainable urban industrial parks. Learn about the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation's sustainable development efforts including the nation's first multi-story "green" industrial building, first solar and wind-powered street lamps, NYC's first building-mounted wind turbines, adaptively reused historic structures, and new green buildings certified by the US Green Buildings Council.  Length of Tour: 2 hours

REQUIREMENTS: Each participant must supply his/her own bicycle & bring and wear a safety helmet at all times while on the Brooklyn Navy Yard tour.

Need to rent a bicycle?  Our bike rental partner at Recycle a Bicycle is a community-based bike shop and non-profit organization that provides educational/job training programs and encourages environmental stewardship and everyday bicycle use.  They offer bike rentals to Urban Oyster's tour goers for a discounted rate of $25 and proceeds go to support their youth programs.  Their shop is located in DUMBO, just a short ride away from the start of the tour.  You must reserve your rental in advance.  Click here to find out more info and to arrange a bike rental or call 718-858-2972 to reach their DUMBO office.  If they are out of rental bikes you can also check out Ride Brooklyn Bike Shop.

Schedule: Public bicycle tours of the Brooklyn Navy Yard run April through October of each year.  We will be posting our 2012 schedule on January 10th.  In the meantime, please join us for a bus tour (see above) or contact us to request a private bicycle tour of the Yard.  Private tours can be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays at anytime of the year.
