Landmarking Bushwick: A Historical Walking Tour
Explore Bushwick's fascinating history of industry, labor, and housing
|
During the early 20th century, many of Brooklyn's most wealthy beer barons headed home at the end of a hard day's work to the mansions of Bushwick Avenue. The few regal mansions that are left of what was once known as "The Boulevard" are symbolic of the wealth and significance of the brewing industry at the turn of the last century. Bushwick educator and Urban Oyster tour guide, Adam Schwartz, has dedicated his spare time to researching this
artchitectural heritage, enlisting the help of his own students at
the Academy of Urban Planning and, more recently, Columbia
University's Historic Preservation Program. During the spring of 2011, they will be resarching together as part of a project by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Led by Adam Schwartz, this tour will combine a survey of Bushwick's industrial past, tempered with an
awareness of the struggle to preserve that past in light of its
tumultuous history.
