Craft beer is making a splash nationwide as the number of beer breweries is skyrocketing! In 1890, there were 2,011 breweries open. That number decreased to 1,179 just before prohibition and then fell even further due to Prohibition. After Prohibition, the number of breweries continued to decline until the 1980s when there were less than 100 nationwide. Fortunately that is when the first wave of craft breweries started to open accorss the country. In the 1990s they took off, retracted a little in the late 90s and then exploded again over the last decade and there are 2,538 breweries open throughout the United State as of 2012. In 2012, New York was 39th in the ranking of per capita breweries with 88 craft breweries. Now in 2014, New York’s per capita breweries has grown with over 130 craft breweries now open!
